After Manchester City lost 2-1 to Chelsea it confirm the Reds as champions of the Premier League, Liverpool’s 30 year wait for a top-flight title is over.

The side of Jurgen Klopp needed a victory to seal the league, but the failure of City to win means that they could not be caught.

This is the 19th top-flight win for Liverpool, and the first since 1989-90.

While being told by the city’s metro mayor to “lay home” because of coronavirus, thousands of fans gathered for a party at Anfield.

Klopp, wearing a Liverpool jersey and visibly emotional, said to Sky Sports: “I don’t have any words, that’s amazing.

“It’s a lot more than I’d ever thought possible. It’s just amazing to become a champion with that club.

“I haven’t been waiting for 30 years-I’ve been here for four and a half years-but it’s quite an achievement, particularly with the three-month break because no one thought we could start.

“I know it is difficult for people in this moment but we could not hold back. We will enjoy this with our supporters when we can.”

As the global pandemic disrupted England ‘s life and led to the Premier League ‘s suspension for three months, supporters in Liverpool endured a nervous wait to see how the season would end, with some early suggestions that it might have been declared null and void, wiping their remarkable efforts off record books.

The return of this month’s Premier League allowed them to cap their stunning success.

However, due to the steps put in place in response to the outbreak, Liverpool would not be able to instantly celebrate its long-awaited triumph with their fans, at least not in the conventional sense.
