Debate: Are these 5 the Greatest WWE Superstars of all time?

THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR

Warrior was at one stage the biggest star in the WWE – even managing to surpass Hulk Hogan at the height of his popularity – due to his fan-friendly mix of dramatic appearances, wild interviews, high octane shows and neon face painting. The timing made his devastating death in 2014 especially poignant: less than 24 hours after his induction to WWE Hall Of Fame.

Although marrying the WWE owner Vince McMahon’s daughter definitely helped his career, the fact remains that ‘The Game’ has regularly played at the highest level for over two decades, winning 13 world titles in the process irrespective of family ties. It is also pretty cool to have your own walkout theme written and produced by Motörhead.

SHAWN MICHAELS

Michaels paved the way for current stars like Daniel Bryan and Chris Jericho by proving that lean and agile wrestlers could be viable major events after the era of huge champions in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The all-action style and charismatic (if often polarizing) personality of ‘Heartbreak Kid’ helped him to become one of the most famous WWE superstars of all time – particularly after he came back against all odds in 2002 after four years out with a (allegedly) career-ending back injury.

THE ROCK

After leaving full-time wrestling in the early ’00s, Dwayne Johnson has gone on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, proving that wrestlers CAN cut it down on the silver screen (the less Hulk Hogan ‘s Mr. Nanny said, the better). But amid his insane schedule, ‘The Great One’ still finds time to add to his reputation in the squared circle – including winning his eighth world title in dramatic fashion at the 2013 Royal Rumble, the same year Forbes named him the world’s top grossing male star.

JOHN CENA

Love him or hate him – and this is always the latter for older fans – it’s hard to deny Cena his place as the top dog in WWE, a role he has kept for more than a decade. The ‘Cenation King’ is also a true gentleman outside the ring, a 15-time world champion with a comic book physique (and a squeaky clean face to boot). Known for his extensive work in charity, he currently holds records for the Make-A-Wish Foundation for most appearances, which supports children for life-threatening illnesses. What a guy.
