The 1998 FIFA World Cup FranceTM had its share of thrilling encounters and definitely one of them was this Round-of-16 clash between Argentina and England.

Twelve years after the dramatic battle of the teams at Mexico in 1986, La Albiceleste again thwarted the Three Lions, this time by their goalkeeper’s side.

Italy ’90, Euro ’96 and France ’98. Twenty years ago, England left the World Cup in an all-too-familiar fashion – penalty shootout – and to this day still seems to wear the scars. David Beckham was sent off so he did not take a penalty kick after the score was level 2-2.

Only Alan Shearer and Michael Owen scored early but were unable to maintain a lead, but in recent years this England team has played with something so missing from the Three Lions: spirit.

From sending-off to disallowed goal:

Two minutes after restart came one of the big turning points. Following Simeone’s foul, a prone Beckham raised his foot in retaliation just below the nose of Danish referee Kim Milton, who considered it a red card.

Despite playing the majority of the game with ten men and without one of their main players, England confused their opponents with stuff. Glenn Hoddle ‘s side even thought with a Sol Campbell header they had snatched victory at death, but the goal was ruled out because of a foul on the keeper. Extra time couldn’t crack the deadlock and then it went to sanctions.

Goal scorers:

Argentina: Gabriel Batistuta (7′ PEN) Javier Zanetti (45’+2′) Penalties: Serbian Berti ( ✅), Hernan Crespo (❌), Juan Veron (✅), Marcelo Gallardo (✅), Roberto Ayala (✅)

England: Alan Shearer (11′ PEN) Michael Owen (17′) Penalties: Alan Shearer (✅), Paul Ince (❌), Paul Merson (✅), Michael Owen (✅), ✅David Batty (❌)
